English Classes

**Note: Because Concurrent College and Honors classes are FULL year classes, they may NOT be taken for just a spring semester. Students cannot get into an honors class without teacher approval at any time. Students must maintain a C average or teacher approval to stay in the class. The State of Idaho has currently adopted the Idaho Core Language Arts Standards and changes in rigor to meet the standards will be reflected in all curriculum.

ATTENTION:
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE TWO FRESHMEN ENGLISH CREDITS AND HAVE CORRECTLY COMPLETED AN MLA RESEARCH PAPER YOU CANNOT MOVE ON TO SOPHOMORE ENGLISH.

Failed credits must be made up during summer school. Shelley High School only offers credit recovery for ONE SEMESTER of freshmen or sophomore English.


English 9 A-B Foundations of World Literature
2 Credits
Full Year Class
Prerequisite: None

This course covers vocabulary, composition, grammar, reading comprehension, and literature (short stories, nonfiction, poetry, drama, novels, and Greek mythology.) Students will also write a two page MLA research paper with a works cited.

Honors English 9 A-B Foundations of World Literature
2 Credits
Full Year Class
Prerequisite: Application form with writing sample, current English grade and teacher recommendation
  

Students will be exposed to a variety of literary genres including short stories, nonfiction, poetry, drama, epic poetry, and novels.  Additionally, students will develop skills to write effective essays.  Focus will be given to vocabulary and grammar usage as well as reading comprehension in accordance with Idaho Core State Standards to prepare students for college and the workplace. Students will also write a minimum two page MLA research paper with a works cited.

English 10 A-B Intro to World Literature

Full Year Class
Required for all sophomores
Prerequisite: 9th grade English

Students will develop skills to write for a variety of audiences and purposes including writing for argumentation, reflection, and criticism. This course will cover a variety of genres including drama, poetry, short stories and novels. Students will focus on grammar usage and vocabulary as well as write a minimum four page MLA research paper with a works cited.

Honors English 10 A-B Intro to World Literature
2 Credits
Full Year Class
Required for all sophomores
Prerequisite:  B or better in English 9 and recommendation from teacher.  Students must also submit an application with a writing sample

Students will develop skills to write for a variety of audiences and purposes, including writing for argumentation, reflection, and rhetorical analysis. Students will conduct an in depth study of literature through a variety of novels and plays analyzing character, theme, literary structure etc. They will focus on grammatical skills in writing as well as write a four to six page MLA research paper with a works cited.

English 11 A-B American Literature
2 Credits
Full Year Class
Required for all juniors
Prerequisite: 10th grade English

This course is a survey of American literature focusing on Native American to contemporary authors. Emphasis is placed on author’s style, rhetorical devices and background knowledge.  Students will continue to develop stylistic and mechanical skills for writing essays to Idaho Core standards, write a 5-7 page MLA research paper. To prepare for college entrance exams (ACT/SAT) students will learn extensive vocabulary and grammatical skills.

Concurrent English 11 A-B /Eng. 1101 College Intro to Writing
2 Credits
Full Year Class
Language and Composition
Prerequisite: Student must pass the Compass College test

This is a one-year college-level course for students who have a solid knowledge of language conventions and who will study to improve their reading and writing skills at least 1 ½ hours nightly. The course prepares students to write effectively and confidently in their college courses across the curriculum and in their professional and personal lives. Students will write, evaluate, rewrite, and revise their drafts, and submit edited final papers. Students must pass the compass exam with a 68 or pass the ACT with a score of 18-24. Students will also be covering the same literature that the regular junior classes in order to be prepared for the ISAT 2 test.

Students may choose to take this class for concurrent enrollment-dual enrollment from ISU for 3 credits. Cost is $65.00 per credit (prices are determined by ISU).

English 12 A-B British Literature

Full Year Class
Prerequisite: English 11

This class will focus on the continued development of vocabulary, grammar skills, and composition through various types of analytic essays and research in combination with a survey of British literature from the Anglo Saxon period through the Victorians. The literature from each period will focus on three main areas: the origins and development of the English language, the origins and development of English culture, and the exemplary authors and poets from each time period. Students are required to write a 6-8 page persuasive research paper in MLA format with a deeper focus on quality of research material and implementing a wider variety of sources.

Concurrent English 12 A-B/1110 Lit. College Intro to Literature
2 Credits High School
Full Year Class
Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation

This college course focuses on the study of fiction using a variety of genres. College credit granted only for a C grade or better.  Students are required to write a 10-15 page MLA research paper with a works cited.

Students may choose to take this class for concurrent enrollment-dual enrollment from ISU for 3 credits. Cost is $65.00 per credit (prices determined by ISU).
